Expressing Displeasure Over Virtual Hearing Conduct

Ahmedabad, July 6: In a rare but stern move, the Gujarat High Court has taken suo motu cognizance and initiated contempt of court proceedings against a man who appeared for a virtual court hearing from a toilet.

The incident, which unfolded during an online hearing, sparked strong reactions from the bench. The court expressed deep displeasure at the man’s “disrespectful and inappropriate conduct,” stating that such behavior undermines the sanctity and dignity of judicial proceedings—even when held virtually.

The man, whose identity has not been disclosed officially, reportedly joined the proceedings via video call while seated on a toilet seat, a move the High Court deemed “a deliberate act of contempt.”

Emphasizing that virtual courtrooms are an extension of the physical court, the judges stated that basic decorum must be maintained at all times, regardless of the platform.

The suo motu contempt notice serves as a reminder of the responsibility litigants and advocates carry to uphold respect toward the institution of justice.

Further hearings in the contempt matter are awaited.
