Court Issues Non-Bailable Warrant to Farooq Abdullah; Firing Attempt in Jammu Wedding Sparks Major Security Questions

Jammu/Srinagar/New Delhi: Dramatic developments unfolded in Jammu and Kashmir after an alleged firing attempt on former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah at a wedding function in Jammu, while a Srinagar court simultaneously issued a non-bailable warrant against him in connection with the JKCA scam case for failing to appear before the court.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident took place at a banquet hall in Greater Kailash, Jammu, where several senior political leaders, ministers, MLAs and other prominent personalities were present for a wedding function.

The accused, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, allegedly approached Dr. Abdullah and placed a pistol near his temple before opening fire. However, security personnel, including SOG commandos, reacted swiftly and pushed the weapon upward at the crucial moment. As a result, the shot went into the air and Dr. Abdullah narrowly escaped unharmed. Witnesses at the scene claimed that two shots were fired during the incident.

The accused was immediately overpowered and later produced before a Jammu court, which granted five days of police remand for further investigation.

During initial questioning, the accused reportedly told authorities that he had wanted to kill Dr. Farooq Abdullah for nearly 20 years and had come to the event with that intention.

Following the incident, Dr. Abdullah addressed the media and said he did not know the attacker and was unaware of any motive or conspiracy behind the act. He stated that at the moment of the incident he only felt a slight sensation and realized later that a pistol had been used.

The firing incident triggered a major political reaction across the country. Union Minister and BJP President J. P. Nadda said that the government will order a detailed inquiry into the attack. The matter was also raised in the Indian Parliament, where Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge and several MPs, including Asaduddin Owaisi and members of the National Conference, questioned how such a serious security lapse could occur despite Z+ security cover for Dr. Abdullah.

However, Dr. Abdullah himself said he would not term the incident as a security lapse, though he described it as unfortunate and noted that no Jammu and Kashmir Police officer appeared to be visibly present in the area at the time of the incident.

Meanwhile, in a parallel legal development, the Srinagar court issued a non-bailable warrant against Dr. Abdullah in connection with the JKCA scam case after he failed to appear before the court following the attack.

The twin developments — the assassination attempt in Jammu and the non-bailable warrant issued by the court — have triggered intense political debate and security concerns across Jammu and Kashmir as investigations continue.
