Activist Sonam Wangchuk Arrested in Leh Amid Ladakh Unrest
Leh, Sept 26 (KDC): Prominent Ladakhi activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk was arrested by Leh Police on Friday following violent protests in the Union Territory. The region has been witnessing unrest over demands for statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
According to officials, the protests turned violent earlier this week, leaving at least four people dead and several others injured. Government offices, a political party office, and a police vehicle were attacked during the clashes.
Authorities have accused Wangchuk of making provocative statements that allegedly incited the mob. In a parallel move, the Centre cancelled the FCRA license of his NGO, Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), and ordered a CBI probe into alleged financial irregularities involving institutions linked to him.
Wangchuk, however, rejected the allegations, calling his arrest a “scapegoat tactic” and insisting that he has always worked for peace. Security forces remain deployed across Leh under strict curfew to prevent further escalations
